A Closer Look at the Appeal
Mr. Petersen was originally allocated 8 demerit points following ESIC’s probe into his participation and inaccurate response to the CSGO coach bug. This verdict was derived after an exhaustive investigation, with the demerit points assigned to Mr. Petersen being subsequently and independently acknowledged by Valve, culminating in a secondary Valve RMR sanction that banned Mr. Petersen from Valve Majors indefinitely.
Although the original sanction by ESIC remains unchanged, the steadfast commitment to the principles of natural justice and equal treatment led to the acceptance of the appeal, despite it being presented nearly three years post the initial sanction. The ESIC Independent Appeal Panel and the ESIC Commissioner have undertaken a thorough review of the case, taking into account new evidence introduced by Mr. Petersen.
Mr. Petersen has effectively demonstrated that the degree of bug exploitation was not as initially estimated. Recognizing this new evidence and in a quest for fairness and equity, the demerit points assigned to Mr. Petersen have been reassessed and diminished from 8 to 5.
Consequences of the Appeal Outcome
It is vital to underscore that this adjustment does not alter the ESIC-imposed sanction (indicating ESIC is not amending its initial sanction in this statement) but notably influences the post-facto Valve RMR sanction. The amended demerit points mitigate the perpetual ban from Valve Majors, instituting a restriction from 5 Majors instead. After this duration, Mr. Petersen will regain eligibility to coach in subsequent Majors.
Significantly, ESIC has conveyed the outcome of the appeal to Valve and has been informed that the appeal’s result has been acknowledged by Valve.
