ZURICH — The Academy of Leadership Sciences Switzerland (ALSS) has announced an upcoming specialized program titled “Introduction to International Esports Law,” designed to equip legal professionals and industry stakeholders with essential knowledge of the rapidly evolving esports landscape.

Scheduled to commence on 23 February 2026, this intensive 8-hour open online course is designed to bridge the gap between traditional sports law and the unique, IP-driven ecosystem of competitive gaming.

Beyond Traditional Sports Law

While traditional sports law provides a foundation, esports introduces a layer of complexity primarily driven by intellectual property ownership. Unlike football or basketball, esports acts are played on proprietary platforms owned by private publishers. The ALSS course aims to deconstruct these nuances, offering attendees a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

The ALSS course is open to a wide demographic, including lawyers, esports administrators, agents, promoters, and even current or former professional players looking to pivot into the business side of the industry.

Curriculum Deep Dive: From Governance to “E-Doping”

The program is structured into four distinct two-hour modules, ensuring a comprehensive overview of the sector’s most pressing legal issues.

1. The Ecosystem and The Olympic Connection The course opens with a foundational analysis of the esports business ecosystem. A key highlight of the 2026 syllabus is the inclusion of “The IOC Esports Games: Opportunities & Legal Considerations,” a timely topic given the International Olympic Committee’s increasing involvement in the space. This module will also cover the “Publisher as Regulator” concept, distinguishing esports governance from the federation-led model of traditional sports.

2. Integrity: The Battle Against Cheats and Hacks As betting markets in esports grow, so do risks regarding integrity. The curriculum delves into match-fixing and the specific phenomenon of “e-doping”—the use of software hacks or performance-enhancing drugs to gain an unfair advantage. This section also explores the complex regulatory landscape surrounding gambling and betting in the digital space.

3. Player Welfare and Contracts With the average age of esports pros being significantly lower than traditional athletes, the course dedicates a specific module to “Minors in Esports Clubs.” This section addresses the ethical and legal considerations of signing young talent. It further breaks down the legal qualification of player contracts and what standard terms are currently regulated in the industry.

4. Dispute Resolution and IP Rights The final module tackles the backbone of the industry: Intellectual Property. Topics include “IP Rights in Esports: Who Owns What?” and the challenges surrounding content creation, streaming, and licensing. Furthermore, it compares arbitration, mediation, and litigation, specifically looking at cross-border legal complexities that arise in global online tournaments.

World-Class Faculty

The course is delivered by a panel of recognized experts in Esports Law, bringing diverse international perspectives to the classroom. The 2026 faculty includes:
