Former HR Manager Alleges Wrongful Termination by Bungie Post Racial Discrimination Report

In a recent legal development within the esports industry, Bungie, renowned as the original creators of the Halo franchise and developers of Destiny 2 and the forthcoming Marathon, is reportedly facing a lawsuit from a former HR manager, Ingrid Alm. The lawsuit alleges wrongful termination and retaliation following Alm’s reporting and investigation into a case of racial discrimination within the company.

Allegations of Racial Discrimination and Retaliation

According to a detailed report by Rebekah Valentine for IGN, Alm has initiated legal proceedings against Bungie, accusing the company of engaging in retaliatory behaviors subsequent to her involvement in a racial bias investigation. The allegations suggest that Alm was forced out of her position wrongfully and involuntarily.

Investigation into Employee Treatment

The events reportedly commenced a few months post-Alm’s hiring in May 2022, when she was tasked with investigating the performance of an employee, pseudonymously referred to as “James Smith.” Smith, the lone Black employee in a team of 50, allegedly confided in Alm, expressing his belief that he was being “singled out and racially targeted by his supervisor.”

Denial of Recommended Actions

Alm’s recommendations for the supervisor to undergo diversity training were reportedly denied. Subsequent to this, Bungie purportedly suggested terminating Smith. However, Alm sought advice from Bungieโ€™s director of equity and inclusion, Dr. Courtney Benjamin, who opined against Smithโ€™s termination. Following her consultation with Benjamin, Alm alleges that she received an irate email from her supervisor and subsequently received a subpar performance review. Her supervisor also advised her to seek an exit from the company.

Controversial Termination

In September 2022, Alm was reportedly informed that her “resignation had been accepted,” despite her insistence on retaining her position and refusing to sign a document affirming her voluntary resignation. This incident allegedly transpired after her “email and Bungie platform access [were] cut off without explanation,” and her purported attempts to communicate with supervisors and higher-ups were disregarded.

Bungieโ€™s Response to the Allegations

Bungie has reportedly refuted “almost every part of Almโ€™s narrative.” It is noteworthy that Alm was employed subsequent to IGNโ€™s report on Bungieโ€™s work culture, which featured allegations from over 25 employees regarding a toxic work culture persisting within the company.

Implications for the Esports Industry

This lawsuit against Bungie underscores the criticality of addressing and navigating workplace discrimination and employee rights issues, particularly within the esports industry. The legal outcome of this case could potentially influence organizational policies and industry standards related to workplace ethics, anti-discrimination practices, and employee protections.

The case highlights the imperative for organizations to foster an inclusive, fair, and ethical work environment, ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards and safeguarding employee rights and organizational integrity.
